CHAPTER FOURTEEN

BACK FROM VACATION

That vacation was everything I felt I needed. I ended up extending it for two days because we were enjoying it just that much. I was able to clear my head and come to the realization that my friend was forever gone. I broke down a few times but it was needed. I cried and screamed it out. And my little man needed the vacation just as much as me. We bonded and talked about everything that was bothering him.

He talked to me about his daddy, and I never knew he felt the way he did. He had a strong dislike for Kareem. Reem would have to wait on that visitation because Jase wasn’t going for it. He loved his daddy, sure enough, but he couldn’t forget the pain that Reem put us through. But we talked through all of his problems because I wanted him to know that his feelings were important too.

Then I had plenty of time to relax and think about my relationship with Zoo. He was perfect but he had a street attachment that was coming between us. I always knew it would be a problem in the back of my head, but I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt. That shit came back to bite me in the ass like a boomerang. I knew he wasn’t hearing me yet about getting out of the streets, but I wasn’t gon’ give up trying to talk some sense into him.

“You good, bae? I know it’s a lot, but please, please, please, just bear with me,” Zoo said.

“I promise you, it’s good. There’s nothing wrong with you taking care of your family, babe.”

He licked his lips. “Damn, how did I get this lucky?” I couldn’t do anything but giggle and kiss him.

When I got back home from vacation, I was surprised to see Zoo’s son and mama here. He told me they had to stay there for a while because a lot was going on. I guess he thought I would be tripping, but it actually warmed my heart. He was becoming the father that his son needed, and his relationship with his mother was rocky but I had a feeling that it would get better with time.

I had to admit, the situations were crazy. I couldn’t believe that a seven-year-old was capable of so much. He wanted to be Zoo so badly. Everything that he was trying to prevent was coming to existence. That was another reason for him to get out of the streets. His son wanted to do the exact same thing his daddy was known for. He ain’t playing that bullshit with Hendrix though. He had his lil’ ass on a short leash. As he should.

Now the whole situation with Sharonda shocked me the most. I didn’t even have much to say to Zoo when he told me about her. I told him about our encounter in the grocery store and he just shook his head. But when Zoo formally introduced us when I got back, it was like her mind went blank.
